ANIMALS 101

>>>Quick Tips<<< The key to using essential oils with animals is to always go very slowly - do not rush and do not push. Your animal will respond better to an essential oil if they are comfortable with you and the odors. Additionally, you don't want to create a negative experience or promote any adverse reactions. Animals are very sensitive to odors and may find a new smell too intense. An aversion to essential oils is a simple dislike to the oils. This usually occurs when an oil has been aggressively introduced. For example, the face, nose, or feet are very sensitive areas so the new smell must be introduced carefully. Aversions arise very quickly and take a long time to overcome, so the more time you take to introduce the oils, the better. Start with very small amounts of essential oil, with therapeutic grade essential oils, one drop is often plenty when you are just beginning. Until you are able to read your animal and see their reaction, make sure they're comfortable, do not exceed small amounts. Avoid using hot or irritating oils on your pets. If you would not use an oil on yourself, do not use it on your pets. Common sense and good judgment must be used. Always have a carrier oil on hand when using oils on your pets, just in case. Do not dilute essential oils with water, only use oil. Water will drive the oils deeper into the animal’s tissue and can increased irritation. Do not use another essential oil to try to cancel or counteract the effect of an oil. Essential oils tend to be species specific. An oil that will be effective when you drink it may best be diffused to help your animal. __________________________________________________ >>>Most animals are more sensitive to essential oils than most humans are<<< -Always dilute heavily before using an essential oil on an animal and use the oils in moderation. -Every animal is going to respond to the oils differently so carefully observe your pet. Use common sense and your best judgment as you try each method. -The eyes are especially sensitive; take extra precautions to keep the essential oils out of their eyes. -Avoid oregano and thyme and other essential oils that are high-phenol oils with animals, especially cats. -Cats are generally very adverse to citrus oils, use them with extreme caution. __________________________________________________ >>> Your animal’s size affects the amount of oil you should use<<< -Dilute every application at least 80 to 90% prior to use on smaller animals. For example, for every one drop of oil, use 4 to 5 drops of carrier oil like V6 vegetable oil complex. Use 3 to 5 drops of the mixture on cats and small dogs. -For large animals, start with 3 to 5 drops of the selected essential oil unless otherwise indicated on the product label. For large dogs, dilution is probably unnecessary. -For very large animals, like horses and cattle, start with 10 drops. Unless otherwise indicated on the product label, dilution is unnecessary. __________________________________________________ >>>Apply oils to yourself or diffuse to introduce animals to essential oils and help them get comfortable<<< -Before using essential oils on your animals, wear the oil while being around your animals. Diffuse the oils in their space or apply them to your hands and let your animal smell them. -If your animal still appears a little nervous or is resistant to the oils, apply the oil to yourself and stay close to your animal, spent several minutes with them so they can become accustomed to the oil and the aroma. __________________________________________________ >>>Essential oils can be administered internally<<< -Mix essential oils directly into your animals food, not all oils are safe so check the oil label carefully. -For larger animals, place the oils into your animals mouth, pull out the bottom lip and drop the oil into their mouth. __________________________________________________ >>>Once they're used to essential oils, animals can respond well to topical application<<< -Paws are a great location for topical application, specifically for cats and dogs. -For hoofed animals, apply the oil or blend to the spine or flanks. -Rub oils onto your own hands and then stroke the animal’s fur. -For large or hard to reach areas, combine essential oils with V6 vegetable oil complex or other carrier oil in a spray bottle for easier application. -Animal Scents ointment can seal and protect areas were essential oils have been topically applied.
